So, why specifically did the judges choose GivEnergy as their “Energy Innovation Award” winner?
🔋 🧠 Turning dumb assets into a smart, interconnected grid
GivEnergy is a British BESS manufacturer. However, we’ve been busy refining our BESS with a focus on creating the most innovative ‘energy as a service’ (EaaS) package technologically available.
So, GivEnergy’s BESS goes beyond the typical battery plus inverter offering. (Though from a hardware perspective, our systems are some of the best-spec’d in the industry.)
We’re about more than our well spec’d hardware, though. With a GivEnergy system, customers can also strategically store, buy, and sell energy via automated algorithms. All without lifting a finger. Should they prefer a hands-on approach, they can also manage their data and system at a granular level.
Our BESS is primarily targeted at the domestic market, with a portfolio of strategically sized solutions designed for everything from flats and social estates, to small-large homes, and to 3-phase battery storage systems for substantial properties.
Together, our services allow customers to take control of – and save money on – their energy spend. But that’s true of any good BESS.

Our end users can effortlessly participate in flexibility schemes, take advantage of off-peak tariffs, and integrate into the energy market directly. All automatically and intelligently, and all with best-in-class data security plus a best-in-class data package.
🖥️ Our EaaS in a nutshell
The software underpinning our BESS (comprising a web portal and mobile app) enables users to:
- Monitor, manage, and analyse their home energy / battery storage system in the cloud
- Get power stats and detail how much energy is going in and out of the home
- Keep tabs on the energy generated from solar, wind, or hydro
- Manage their EV charge point and display the latest information about their EV
- Connect appliances to smart plugs for usage data and remote control
- Track how much energy they’re importing and exporting via the grid
- Ask Alexa for power updates and tell her to turn app-connected devices on/off
- Get visibility on the overall energy consumption of your home
- Monitor their home battery state of charge, battery health, and throughput
- Run at the optimal battery power at all times via inbuilt smart algorithms that predict the weather and import energy as required in line with forecasts
But that’s only scratching the surface. From an innovation perspective, we’ve been delivering some true industry game-changer features that makes this software the ultimate in interconnected EaaS…
🏆 The USPs
GivEnergy battery storage products are manufactured entirely in-house. Plus, our propriety software is custom-developed in the UK from a team of circa 30 engineers. This end-to-end control means we can offer a highly intelligent and truly transformative EaaS package along with the hardware.
Smart tariff integration
Our BESS offer a direct, inbuilt integration with smart tariffs. This allows systems to charge and discharge intelligently. (I.e., auto-charging when the cheapest, cleanest energy is flowing through the wires, and auto-discharging when energy costs peak.)
This is true of any smart tariff (i.e. Octopus Agile and Economy 7 meters). However, even more exciting is our direct work on battery tariffs with energy providers.
For example, take the unique smart tariff – Intelligent Octopus Flux – that we’ve newly delivered alongside Octopus, designed to work with GivEnergy batteries. The tariff unlocks the combined benefits of solar power and battery storage, creating more than £450 of savings per year for consumers.
We’re also working on a similar package with Ovo, this time designed to work with standalone battery installations. (I.e., batteries installed without solar.) This will enable 2x cheap battery cycles per day when energy is cheaper and greener.
Smart grid services
GivEnergy battery energy storage systems allow customers to participate in flexibility schemes dynamically and automatically.
For example, our newly launched ‘GivBack DFS’ scheme enables customers to auto-sell energy to support the grid under the strain. (For a tidy profit!) To use an example from just one such event, 4275 participants delivered 9.1MWh to the grid on a strained evening, while earning £19,775.
We’re also piloting some grid services that go beyond DFS with our partners Axle Energy. The grid service scheme will be expanding its pilot to include 500 end users – all via GivEnergy smart home batteries.
API access
Our system API access allows us to partner with homebuilders and integrate with multiple technologies / providers for low carbon social housing projects.
For example, our work with Together Housing makes us the battery storage provider for a ground-breaking social housing project covering 27,000 homes. The project entails the installation – and integration – of multiple energy technologies. By combining solar PV, storage batteries, and air source heat pumps, the project’s end goal is to enable social housing occupants to power their lives cheaply, cleanly, and in line with the UK’s net zero goals.
It is GivEnergy that is powering the vast battery storage part of this social project, and GivEnergy EaaS that is enabling the collaborative software integration between various service providers. All thanks to the flexibility of the API and aggregation services underpinning the hardware.
Meanwhile, our API access also allows us to help Octopus and homebuilders power ‘Zero Bills’ – a next-generation energy tariff with zero energy bills for five years, guaranteed.
💡 A special approach to technological innovation
GivEnergy is the only global battery storage manufacturer whose software and data teams operate in the UK. We work with governments and third-party IoT internet security services to ensure that sensitive energy data is protected against cyberthreat. Our software department runs as its own separate legal entity – keeping critical digital assets secure and isolated within the UK only.
So, not only do we provide the physical hardware (batteries, inverters, EV chargers, smart plugs), we have a distinct, innovative IT arm that provides the most detailed, financially gainful EaaS currently available.
Ultimately, there are many BESS providers. But there are none in the market focusing on the full hardware plus EaaS package like GivEnergy. Nor are there any as focused on the accompanying data services. We’re a full, holistic package – and we’re committed to continual innovation.
