What is IP65 rating?

When it comes to waterproof and dustproof protection, IP65 is pretty run-of-the-mill, especially for products designed for use outdoors.

GivEnergy battery storage systems are no exception.

But what does IP65 actually mean? How waterproof is waterproof?

What is IP65 rating?

And the question you’re all pondering: ‘is my GivEnergy home battery waterproof?’

So, what is IP65 rating?

IP ratings are internationally recognised standards developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Let’s break down what an IP rating is.

IP stands for ingress protection.

Ingress refers to the act of entering something. Therefore, a product’s ingress protection level refers to its ability to prevent things from entering it.

Now let’s break down the numbers.

The first number after IP refers to level of protection against solid foreign objects.

The ratings are defined as follows:

  • 0 – no protection
  • 1 – protection against solid foreign objects of 50mm in diameter
  • 2 – protection against solid foreign objects of 12.5mm and greater in diameter
  • 3 – protection against solid foreign objects of 2.5mm and greater in diameter
  • 4 – protection against solid foreign objects of 1mm and greater in diameter
  • 5 – protection against dust
  • 6 – dust tight

The second number after IP refers to the level of protection against water.

The ratings are defined as follows:

  • 0 – no protection
  • 1 – protection against vertically falling water drops
  • 2 – protection against vertically falling water drops when enclosure tilted up to 15 degrees
  • 3 – protection against spraying water
  • 4 – protection against splashed water
  • 5 – protection against water jets
  • 6 – protection against powerful water jets
  • 7 – protection against the effects of temporary immersion in water
  • 8 – protection against the effects of continuous water immersion
  • 9 – protection against high pressure and temporary water jets

So, there you have it. IP65 means dust tight and waterproof to the point of being sprayed with water jets.

For context…

… IP65 tends to be a benchmark for devices designed for outdoor use.

For example, if you’re looking for an outdoor security camera, IP65 should come as standard.

When it comes to smartphones, most up-to-date models come with minimum IP65 rating.

Some go as high as IP68, meaning your phone will still work if continuously immersed in water.

Good news for anyone prone to jumping in a swimming pool fully clothed with a phone in one of the pockets.

IP69 ratings are rare for consumer products. This is usually a rating reserved for industrial level, such as machinery used in food processing, or production of pharmaceuticals.

‘Is my GivEnergy battery waterproof?’

All GivEnergy home batteries are IP65 rated.

So, that means your battery is dust tight and waterproof to the point of being sprayed with water jets.

That being said, we would advise against spraying your battery with a water jet because… well… why?

However, you can rest assured that no harm will come to your battery from rain or a few splashes.

This means your battery is suitable for outdoor installation, assuming you keep it away from direct heat sources and leave room for ventilation.

Even though the battery is waterproof, you should still cover it with a canopy in the case of outdoor installation. That’s to prevent leaves and other debris from clogging up the heatsink.
