Battery storage helps reduce electricity bills to just £14 per month

As energy prices soar amid a cost of living crisis, more and more billpayers are looking to find ways to cut costs. Most of us know about tactics like washing clothes at 30 degrees, or turning off devices in standby mode. But fewer people are aware of one of the most powerful ways to reduce electricity bills: battery storage technology.

A storage battery – put simply – will store up a supply of energy. To do so, it can charge using energy from renewables (like solar panels), or simply charge overnight using cheap, off-peak grid power. You can then run your home on battery power – dodging expensive grid rates in the process.

When it comes to controlling energy costs, then, a storage battery is a game-changer. Indeed, one GivEnergy customer – Gordon Gilchrist – has been able to reduce electricity bills to just £14 per month. In his own words, here’s Gordon’s story.

The goals

Gordon, like many of us, was looking at ways to reduce his energy spend. As something of a techie, however, Gordon was already aware of the benefits of battery storage – and spent his time researching various options.

“My primary goal was to save money spent on energy, without a lot of effort. I also have an interest in energy efficiency, technology and data in general.

I looked at many PV inverter/battery systems and narrowed my choice down to GivEnergy. The reasons for this decision included:

  1. Remote access controls of the system with either the mobile app or the web portal
  2. Intuitive and well laid out software systems
  3. A UK base, giving me confidence in the customer support
  4. A good GivEnergy technical presence on Facebook, resolving live customer problems
  5. An active community on Facebook, helping each other understand their system nuances
  6. Regularly evolving software that improved in response to customers – rather than sitting stagnant
  7. Good value for money compared to other systems.

The installation

To meet his goals, control his energy usage, and reduce electricity bills as much as possible, Gordon invested in a high-spec setup. This spanned solar panels, an immersion heater time clock, an economy 7 electric meter, and of course, our own GivEnergy kit.

Gordon ordered:

  • – A GivEnergy 5kW hybrid inverter
    – A GivEnergy 9.5kWh battery

The results

Solar PV combined with battery storage is allowing Gordon to save the most possible money, in the quickest possible timeframe. When paired together, the technologies allow Gordon to not only generate free renewable energy, but also to store that energy for use when the sun is no longer shining. (I.e., during peak evening hours.)

The results are impressive. First, Gordon has been able to massively reduce electricity bills. From £150 per month, Gordon’s bill is now down to just £14 per month. Plus, Gordon has projected a total saving of just over £2600 per annum, on top of an income of £900 for export.

“Prior to PV installation, I was consuming 15kWh per day on average. At 35p a kWh, that was about £150 each month.

Since the PV installation, I have made many energy savings on consumption alone. With solar powering the house during the day and the battery powering the house until the economy 7 kicks in, I import virtually no electricity at peak rates.

My monthly electric bill is down to about £14 per month, rather than the £150. I have projected a saving of just over £2600 per annum and an income of £450 for export.

For example, my current February savings show a £146 saving in my electric bill, a £75 saving on boiler heating to hot water, and £18 income for exported electricity. This is before the summer sun generation has even really started.”

- Electricity bill at £14 per month

- Better off by £3,050 per annum
